Wem Town enjoyed a successful afternoon on Saturday at home to Shifnal. They won 2-0 in what turned out to be a comfortable afternoon for the hosts. Always on the front foot, they took the lead from a corner, where Mattie Cohen rised highest and his header hit Jim Astley on the heel and went into the net. The second also came in the first half when the keeper made a mess of coming out and Dave Walbyoff profited from hitting an empty net from 25 yards.
In the second half, the home side could have extended their lead as Shifnal pushed to get themselves back in the game. However, Wem weren’t as clinically as they would have liked and left Shifnal with a glimmer of hope. They didn’t cause many concerns to the backline of Wem and the game finished 2-0.
Here is what the manager had to say after the win:
It was great to record another victory after the disappointment of losing in the Vase the previous week. That is now back to back victories in the league so hopefully we can use this as a springboard for the rest of the season. It was really a good performance from the boys at the weekend, I saw the resilience and the attitude return from last season which served us so well. Each game we seem to be getting better availability and obviously that is only going to enhance us going forward. We now have a tough away trip to Wellington to ponder. They have picked up recently so I am sure it will be a tough test. If we continue to show this attitude and effort I am confident we can go and get the result.
The club would like to wish Shifnal all the best for the rest of the season.
